Supporting Classmates with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Characteristic:

ASD is characterized by challenges in social interactions and communication, repetitive behaviors, strong adherence to routines, and sensory sensitivities.

How to Support them ?

  • Show empathy, acceptance, and appreciation.
Understand that their honest but sometimes blunt expressions are not meant to be rude. Respect their need for routines and consistency, as these provide them with a sense of security. Recognizing and appreciating their strengths can boost their confidence and sense of belonging.

  • Communicate clearly and directly.
Use concrete and explicit language instead of metaphors, sarcasm, or vague expressions that might be confusing. This helps avoid misunderstandings and frustration.

  • Respect their social limitations and help them integrate.
Since social interaction and communication are key challenges, acknowledge that it’s not about lack of effort but an inherent difficulty. Support them in group activities, presentations, or study collaborations (e.g., sharing notes or past exams). Even small gestures of inclusion can make a huge difference in their world.
