Supporting Classmates with ADHD
Definition:
ADHD( Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, which can affect daily life and learning.
How to Support them :
-
Show empathy and avoid labels.
Understand that their behaviors are due to a neurological condition, not a lack of effort or motivation. Avoid labeling them as lazy or careless. -
Keep communication concise and clear.
Since ADHD students struggle with sustaining attention, avoid lengthy explanations. Simplify instructions and highlight key points to help them stay focused. -
Provide specific reminders.
Because working memory challenges can make it hard for them to remember multi-step tasks, offer clear, step-by-step reminders to help them complete assignments or activities. -
Offer academic support when needed.
If they fall behind in class, offer to share notes, study together, or engage in discussions to help them catch up and reinforce learning.
